Black-eyed Peas for Two
Submitted by Marie
I adapted this simple recipe for two people and it was perfect.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb bag black eyed dried peas(use only 1/2 bag of peas; from a 1 pound bag)
- 3 1/2 cups water or broth of your choice
- 1/2 bag diced frozen onions (1 1/2 cups)
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 1 Tablespoon oregano or other spice
- 1 1/2 teaspoons table salt
Directions:
- press bean/chili button
- use natural steam release method
- makes very tender beans, my husband loved them!! and I did, too.
Great recipe! I used a bit shy of 3 c water after rinsing and sorting the beans. For spices, I added oregano, thyme, basil, pepper and smoked paprika.

Going to make this with cornbread for 12 people on new year’s day. Any suggestions? Concerned it says press bean/chili button but recipe is for 2…how long for 12 people or will that button work (bean/chili)? Thanks for suggestions.

Thanks for the reviews and the point of adding ham. I have a ham bone and a bag of black-eyed peas. I want to make a soup using my new pot. I’m excited to see that adding these things will be ok in this recipe. This and corn bread should give me a taste of my childhood. My mom used to make this in a crock pot for Sunday dinners. My kids are teens and I’ve not yet made it! What was I thinking?

I would use a smoked ham hock, perfect flavor.

Love this recipe! I make it with chicken stock, summer savory, oregano, pepper, ham, bacon or pork.

I add a few strips of bacon (chopped) to my pot (saluted) for a few minutes (while preparing my peas). This will add the southern touch to them.

Great Idea! My husband suggested I add some pork, so the next time I am going to add some chopped celery and a ham hock. The bacon sounds perfect, yet I am allergic to bacon ; ( not ham, just the bacon….must be the additives…I miss eating chocolate covered bacon….
